If you’ve subscribed to Cake in the City’s youtube channel, you already know that our father is a Veteran and pound cake is his favorite dessert. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Monday Nov 11th, we will be giving all Veteran’s a free mini pound cake on Saturday November 9th (we are closed on Mondays). As promised in the video, here are a few additional tips for baking a great pound cake:
1. Grease the pan. Vegetable shortening, such as Crisco, dusted with flour works will, so does Baker’s Joy. Whatever you do, don’t pour the batter in the pan before you grease it!
2. Mix, mix, mix. Good baking takes time so don’t rush the process. When adding ingredients give them a chance to mix together well before adding the next ingredient.
3. Don’t overcook. Test for doneness by inserting a long toothpick or knife into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is done. Since the pan and cake are still hot they will continue to cook moments after coming out of the oven, so once the toothpick is clean take it out immediately to avoid a dry cake.
4. Topping. Flavored drizzles, such as lemon, almond, pineapple, and chocolate add a delicious touch. Another great idea is to top your pound cake with fresh fruit and eat it while enjoying a nice cup of coffee.
